2. EXPAND YOUR CERTIFICATIONS
OBJECTIVE: REPLACE DBE CERTIFICATION BENEFITS BY
OBTAINING ALTERNATIVE CREDENTIALS AND ENTERING
NEW NETWORKS.
Steps:
1. Research and apply for other certifications with the Small Business
Administration. https://www.sba.gov/federal-contracting
2. Many transit agencies, municipalities, and state and local governments
offer their own small business certification and procurement programs
outside the federal DBE Program. These may include SBE, MBE, WBE,
HUB, and other agency-specific opportunities.
3. We encourage businesses to ask their local transit agencies and
government partners about available certifications, vendor registration
programs, and contracting opportunities. Eligibility requirements vary by
program.
Why It Matters: Certifications outside of DBE programs can still grant access
to private-sector opportunities and build credibility.
3. STRENGTHEN DIRECT RELATIONSHIPS WITH PRIMES
AND AGENCIES
OBJECTIVE: BUILD STRONG, INDEPENDENT
PARTNERSHIPS THAT DON’T RELY SOLELY ON DBE
REQUIREMENTS.
Steps:
1. Identify prime contractors that prioritize small business relationships.
2. Network directly with decision-makers at industry events and
matchmaking sessions.
3. Offer added value by showcasing your track record, expertise, and
unique capabilities.
Why It Matters: Focusing on your business’s value beyond DBE status
positions you as an indispensable partner.
