Program Track: Leading in Middle Management
Project Title: Improving Operational Efficiency in Transit Operations
Our team is focused on improving operational efficiency in transit by examining how day-to-day
service delivery is impacted by scheduling, workforce availability, and resource use. Transit
agencies face ongoing challenges with operator attendance, overtime, service gaps, and
changing ridership demand, all of which affect whether routes are consistently covered.
Our project looks at how aligning service with demand can reduce inefficiencies such as
deadhead mileage, uneven workloads, and missed trips. At the same time, we examine how
working conditions, communication, and schedule design influence operator attendance,
retention, and overall workforce stability.
By using operational data to plan ahead and respond to issues like staffing shortages and service
disruptions, we aim to identify practical strategies that improve on-time performance and
control costs. Our findings will show how better coordination between scheduling and
workforce support can lead to more consistent service and a system riders can rely on.
